John 12:36
"Jesus therefore said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness doesn’t overtake you. He who walks in the darkness doesn’t know where he is going."
Key Reflection
In first-century Judea, walking in physical darkness was fraught with danger as one could easily stumble into pitfalls or be attacked by bandits. Jesus uses this imagery to convey a profound spiritual truth: the light of his teachings and presence would soon wane, urging the people to act promptly while they had guidance. This warning reflects the historical context of imminent change—much like a traveler in the night needing to hurry before the darkness envelops them fully, the disciples were urged to follow Jesus’s teachings actively while they still had access to his light, lest their spiritual path become as perilous and uncertain as walking in literal darkness.
