Joel 3:9

"and I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hands of the children of Judah, and they will sell them to the men of Sheba, to a faraway nation, for the LORD has spoken it.”"

Key Reflection

In Joel 3:9, God is speaking through the prophet to announce divine judgment and punishment against a rebellious people. The original audience would have understood this as a dire prophecy, envisioning their sons and daughters being sold into captivity by the Judahites and then further sold to distant nations like Sheba. This imagery of children being sold reflects the harsh realities of ancient warfare and the practice of enslavement, where defeated peoples were often taken captive and dispersed far from home. The mention of Sheba indicates the extent of this punishment, highlighting how God's judgment would extend even to lands at a great distance, emphasizing the severity of the divine wrath.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles -God having before said that He would “gather all nations,” now, by a solemn irony, bids them prepare, if, by any means, they can fight against Him. So in Isaiah; “Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand, for God is with us” (Isaiah 8:9-10; see alsoEzekiel 38:7-23).
