Job 5:21

"In famine he will redeem you from death; in war, from the power of the sword."

Key Reflection

Job 5:21 reassures Job and his friends that in times of famine, God will deliver His people from death, and during wars, He will protect them from the sword's destructive power. For the original audience, this would have been particularly poignant as they lived in a world where natural disasters like famines and conflicts between nations were common, often seen as divine judgments or punishments for moral failings. The promise of deliverance through God’s intervention offered comfort and hope amidst such hardships.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue -Margin, Or, “when the tongue scourgeth.” The word rendered “scourge” -שׁוטshôṭ- means properly a whip. It is used of God when he scourges people by calamities and punishments;Isaiah 10:26;Job 9:23. See the use of the verbשׁוּטshûṭinJob 2:7. Here it is used to denote a slanderous tongue, as being that which inflicts a severe wound upon the reputation and peace of an individual.
