Job 36:26

"All men have looked on it. Man sees it afar off."

Key Reflection

Job 36:26 states, "All men have looked on it. Man sees it afar off." This verse highlights the omnipresence and grandeur of God's work from a human perspective. In first-century Jewish culture, where visual experiences played a significant role in conveying truths, this statement underscores that even distant observers can discern the greatness of God’s creation. The use of "all men" (כל的人, kol) indicates that this is a universal truth, suggesting that regardless of one's proximity or involvement, the majesty and complexity of God’s works are evident to all who take the time to observe them carefully.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Behold, God is great, and we know him not -That is, we cannot fully comprehend him; see the notes atJob 11:7-9. Neither can the number of his years be searched out -That is, he is eternal. The object of what is said here is to impress the mind with a sense of the greatness of God, and with the folly of attempting fully to comprehend the reason of what he does. Man is of a few days, and it is presumption in him to sit in judgment on the doings of one who is from eternity.
