Job 26:9

"He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not burst under them."

Key Reflection

In Job 26:9, the image of God binding up the waters in thick clouds symbolizes His sovereign control over nature. This metaphor extends to signify that despite vast amounts of water being held suspended, they do not overwhelm or burst the cloud, highlighting God's power and faithfulness in sustaining balance and order.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

He holdeth back the face of his throne -That is, he does not exhibit it - he covers it with clouds. The idea seems to be, that God sometimes comes forth and manifests himself to mankind, but that he comes encompassed with clouds, so that his throne cannot be seen. So inPsalms 18:11, β€œHe made darkness his secret place, his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.” God is often represented as encompassed with clouds, or as accompanied with tempests. And spreadeth his cloud upon it -That is, so that it cannot be seen. There is much poetic beauty in this image.
