Job 24:19

"“They are foam on the surface of the waters. Their portion is cursed in the earth. They don’t turn into the way of the vineyards."

Key Reflection

Job 24:19 paints a vivid picture of the wicked, likening them to "foam on the surface of the waters," which suggests their transient and superficial nature, quickly dissipating like bubbles on water. Their lives are described as "cursed in the earth," indicating that they face divine judgment and lack any lasting blessing or prosperity. Furthermore, instead of benefiting from stable and enduring wealth symbolized by "the way of the vineyards," these wicked individuals fail to achieve genuine stability or success, reflecting a life marked by fleeting and ultimately fruitless endeavors.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Drought and heat consume the snow-waters -Margin, “violently take;” see the notes atJob 6:17. The word rendered “consume,” and in the margin “violently take” (יגזלוyı̂gâzelû), means properly to strip off, as skin from the flesh; and then to pluck or tear away by force; to strip, to spoil, to rob. The meaning here is, that the heat seems to seize and carry away the snow waters - to bear them off, as a plunderer does spoil. There is much poetic beauty in this image. The “snow-waters” here mean the waters that are produced by the melting of the snow on the hills, and which swell the rivulets in the valleys below.
