Job 18:12

"Terrors will make him afraid on every side, and will chase him at his heels."

Key Reflection

In Job 18:12, the prophet describes a terrifying fate for those who oppose God's judgment. The verse paints a vivid picture of relentless fear that surrounds the wicked person from all directions and relentlessly pursues them. This imagery reflects the cultural understanding of divine retribution, where evil is not just punished but pursued with unyielding force, leaving no escape.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

His strength shall be hungerbitten -Shall be exhausted by hunger or famine. And destruction shall be ready at his side -Hebrew “Shall be fitted”נכוּןnākûn“to his side.” Some have supposed that this refers to some disease, like the pleurisy, that would adhere closely to his side. So Jerome understands it.
