Job 16:11

"They have gaped on me with their mouth. They have struck me on the cheek reproachfully. They gather themselves together against me."

Key Reflection

In Job 16:11, these verses vividly depict the harshness and cruelty of Job's friends who, despite their intentions, spoke evil against him with sharp words (gaping on him with their mouth) and treated him with disrespect (striking his cheek reproachfully). Their actions reveal a collective opposition that left Job feeling abandoned even by those who were supposed to offer comfort and support.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

God hath delivered me -Margin “shut me up.” The meaning is, that God had committed him to their hands as a prisoner or captive. They had power over him to do as they pleased. To the ungodly -Into the hands of wicked people - meaning undoubtedly his professed friends. And turned me over -The word used here (fromירטyârat) means to throw head long, to precipitate, to cast down. Here it means, “he has thrown me headlong into the hands of the wicked.”
