Job 1:2

"There were born to him seven sons and three daughters."

Key Reflection

In the context of first-century Jewish literature, Job 1:2 highlights the significance of family in ancient Near Eastern culture, where having multiple children was often a mark of prosperity and social status. The mention of seven sons and three daughters would have underscored Job’s wealth and prominence in his society, setting the stage for what would follow—a narrative that tests this seemingly ideal life through severe trials.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters -The same number was given to him again after these were lost, and his severe trials had been endured; seeJob 42:13. Of his second family the names of the daughters are mentioned,Job 42:14. Of his first, it is remarkable that neither the names of his wife, his sons nor his daughters are recorded. The Chaldee, however, on what authority is unknown, says that the name of his wife wasדינהdı̂ynâh,Job 2:9.
