In their eyes, Jeremiah was a man of God with direct access to divine favor; thus, praying for them seemed a logical step in seeking divine assistance against their adversaries. The original audience would have seen this as an acknowledgment that prayer and divine intervention were still possible, even under Babylonian rule.
