Jeremiah 28:16

"Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen, Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you, but you make this people trust in a lie."

Key Reflection

In Jeremiah 28:16, the prophet Jeremiah confronts Hananiah for falsely claiming divine authority. Jeremiah asserts that God did not send Hananiah; instead, his message is a lie intended to deceive the people. This incident highlights the serious consequences of false prophecy in ancient Israelite society, where genuine and divinely inspired messages were crucial for the community's spiritual and moral well-being. The cultural context underscores how such false prophets could potentially lead the people astray, making Jeremiah’s challenge to Hananiah a pivotal moment in maintaining religious integrity and truthfulness within the prophetic tradition.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

I will cast thee -Rather, I send thee away. God had not sent Hananiah to prophesy, but He does now send him away to die. Taught rebellion -As Nebuchadnezzar was Yahweh’s servant, to teach rebellion against him was to teach rebellion against his Master.
