Jeremiah 22:22

"I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said, ‘I will not listen.’ This has been your way from your youth, that you didn’t obey my voice."

Key Reflection

In Jeremiah 22:22, the prophet speaks to a period of national prosperity for Judah, where God had repeatedly called the leaders to heed His commands and walk in righteousness. Yet, these leaders stubbornly refused, demonstrating a consistent pattern of disobedience that began from their youth. This verse highlights both the ongoing nature of their rebellion and the severity of their neglect of divine guidance, setting up the inevitable consequences they would face due to their persistent unfaithfulness.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Shall eat up all thy pastors -literally, shall depasture (Jeremiah 2:16note) thy pastors. Those who used to drive their flocks to consume the herbage shall themselves be the first prey of war. The “pastors” mean not the kings only, but all in authority.
