Jeremiah 21:12

"“Concerning the house of the king of Judah, hear the LORD’s word:"

Key Reflection

In Jeremiah 21:12, the Lord delivers a stern warning directly to the royal household of Judah. This verse sets the stage for a prophetic message emphasizing that despite their position and security in the valley and the rock of Jerusalem, they are not immune to divine judgment. The cultural context reflects the common belief that fortified cities were impervious, but this text challenges such assumptions by declaring that even kings and their courts face the Lord’s wrath.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Execute judgment -As the administration of justice was performed in old time in person, the weal of the people depended to a great degree upon the personal qualities of the king (see2 Samuel 15:4). And as “the oppressor” was generally some powerful noble, it was especially the king’s duty to see that the weaker members of the community were not wronged.
