Jeremiah 18:11

"if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they don’t obey my voice, then I will repent of the good with which I said I would benefit them."

Key Reflection

In Jeremiah's time, this prophecy would have been a stark warning to the people of Judah about the consequences of their rebellious and wicked actions. The phrase "if they do that which is evil in my sight" suggests that God was watching over them, ready to judge their disobedience. The idea of God repentedg of the good he had intended to bring implies a conditional nature to divine blessings; if the people strayed from his path, even previously promised benefits could be rescinded, reflecting the seriousness with which God viewed their actions and their impact on covenant relationships.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The word rendered “frame” is a present participle, and is the same which as a noun means “a potter.” God declares that He is as free to do what He will with the Jews as the potter is free to shape as he will the clay. Devise a device - “I am purposing a purpose.”
