Jeremiah 16:7

"Both great and small will die in this land. They will not be buried. Men won’t lament for them, cut themselves, or make themselves bald for them."

Key Reflection

In Jeremiah 16:7, the prophecy suggests a time of severe judgment where even high and low social statuses are equalized in death, as neither proper burials nor traditional mourning rites will be observed. This emphasizes the severity of God's wrath and the utter desolation of the land under divine displeasure.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Tear themselves -Better as in the margin; “break broad for them.” It was customary upon the death of a relative to fast, and for the friends and neighbors after a decent delay to come and comfort the mourner, and urge food upon him2 Samuel 12:17; food was also distributed at funerals to the mourners, and to the poor. Cup of consolation -Marginal reference note.
