James 4:2

"Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members?"

Key Reflection

James 4:2 challenges the source of conflict by directly addressing the internal desires and passions of believers. In essence, James is suggesting that wars and fights arise not from external circumstances alone, but rather from the internal struggles within individuals—specifically, their uncontrolled desires and lusts. This verse invites a deeper self-examination, encouraging readers to recognize how personal sins and selfish ambitions fuel external conflicts, reflecting a broader theme of spiritual warfare and the need for humility and control over one's emotions and desires.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 2. Ye lust, and have not. That is, you wish to have something which you do not now possess, and to which you have no just claim, and this prompts to the effort to obtain it by force. You desire extension of territory, fame, booty, the means of luxurious indulgence, or of magnificence and grandeur, and this leads to contest and bloodshed. These are the causes of wars on the large scale among nations, and of the contentions and strifes of individuals.
