James 3:17

"For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed."

Key Reflection

James 3:17 encapsulates a profound truth about the nature of true wisdom as opposed to destructive traits like jealousy and selfish ambition. In first-century Jewish culture, such vices were seen as deeply unsettling and chaotic; they led not only to disorder within an individual's life but also to various forms of evil deeds that disrupted communal harmony. By contrast, true wisdom is pure, peaceful, gentle, reasonable, and characterized by genuine mercy and good fruits—traits that bring order and positivity wherever they are found.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 17. But the wisdom that is from above. See Barnes on "1 Co 2:6". The wisdom which has a heavenly origin, or which is from God. The man who is characterized by that wisdom will be pure, peaceable, etc. This does not refer to the doctrines of religion, but to its spirit. Is first pure. That is, the first effect of it on the mind is to make it pure. The influence on the man is to make him upright, sincere, candid, holy. The word here used (agnov) is that which would be applied to one who is innocent, or free from crime or blame.
