James 2:23

"You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected."

Key Reflection

James 2:23 emphasizes that genuine faith is not merely intellectual assent but also active in deeds. The apostle draws this conclusion from the example of Abraham, whose faith was confirmed by his actions—specifically, his willingness to obey God's command to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22). This biblical reference illustrates that true faith produces works, and through those works, faith is demonstrated and completed. Thus, James argues that a person’s faith can be validated not just by declaration but also by the fruits of their actions in daily life.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 23. And the Scripture was fulfilled which saith. That is, the fair and full meaning of the language of Scripture was expressed by this act, showing in the highest sense that his faith was genuine; or the declaration that he truly believed, was confirmed or established by this act. His faith was shown to be genuine; and the fair meaning of the declaration that he believed God was carried out in the subsequent act. The passage here referred to occurs in Ge 15:6.
