Isaiah 9:5

"For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as in the day of Midian."

Key Reflection

This verse symbolizes the deliverance and relief brought by God, comparing it to the liberation of Israel during the time of Gideon and his forces against the Midianites. The breaking of these symbols—burden, staff, and rod—indicates the end of oppressive weight and tyranny, pointing forward to a time of peace and freedom under divine guidance.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

For every battle of the warrior -The expression used here has caused great difficulty, from the fact that it occurs nowhere else in the Scriptures. The wordסאוןse'ôn, rendered here battle, is supposed to mean rather greaves, or the armor of the warrior which covered the feet and the legs. It would be literally translated, ‘Every greave of those armed with greaves.’ - Gesenius.
