Isaiah 8:15

"He will be a sanctuary, but for both houses of Israel, he will be a stumbling stone and a rock that makes them fall. For the people of Jerusalem, he will be a trap and a snare."

Key Reflection

In Isaiah 8:15, the prophet foretells that a figure, likely a messianic king, will serve as both sanctuary and refuge for Israel but also become a source of conflict and division. For the northern kingdom (Israel) and Jerusalem in particular, this same figure would act as a trap and snare, ensnaring them with his teachings or actions that challenge their established ways, much like how literal traps and snares would catch unsuspecting animals. This dual role reflects the tension between stability and disruption that was central to the prophetic tradition of Isaiah, addressing both the hope for a secure future and the inevitable trials that would face the people.
