Isaiah 56:8

"I will bring these to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”"

Key Reflection

In Isaiah 56:8, God promises that He will gather those who adhere to His laws and worship Him in true devotion, bringing them to a holy mountain—a symbolic reference to Jerusalem and the temple where sacrificial worship took place. This gathering is not limited to Israelites but includes "all peoples," signifying a broader inclusion of foreigners and Gentiles into God’s community, reflecting a shift from exclusivity to inclusivity in divine worship. The original audience would have understood this as a significant departure from their current practices, where only circumcised males could participate fully in the temple rituals, envisioning a future where everyone could freely approach God's house of prayer and find acceptance through their offerings.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The Lord God -This verse is a continuation of the promise made in the previous verses, that those of other nations would be united to the ancient people of God. The sense is, that Yahweh would not only gather back to their country those who were scattered abroad in other lands, but would also call to the same privileges multitudes of those who were now aliens and strangers. Which gathereth the outcasts of Israel -Who will collect again and restore to their own country those of the Jews who were scattered abroad - the exiles who were in distant lands. Yet will I gather others to him -To Israel; that is, to the Jews (seeJohn 10:16).
