Isaiah 41:3

"Who has raised up one from the east? Who called him to his feet in righteousness? He hands over nations to him and makes him rule over kings. He gives them like the dust to his sword, like the driven stubble to his bow."

Key Reflection

Isaiah 41:3 speaks of God's sovereign power in raising up a leader, specifically Cyrus, from the east to fulfill His purposes. This verse highlights how God called this individual to righteousness and equipped him with the authority to conquer nations effortlessly, much like a sword cuts through dust or a bow dispatches stubble. The cultural context underscores the idea that such a feat was seen as miraculous, given the significance of rulership in ancient Near Eastern society, where military prowess and divine favor were closely linked.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

He pursued them -When they were driven away. He followed on, and devoted them to discomfiture and ruin. And passed safely -Margin, as Hebrew, β€˜In peace.’ That is, he followed them uninjured; they had no power to rally, he was not led into ambush, and he was safe as far as he chose to pursue them. Even by the way that he had not gone with his feet -By a way that he had not been accustomed to march; in an unusual journey; in a land of strangers. Cyrus had passed his early years on the east of the Euphrates. In his conquests he crossed that river, and extended his march beyond even the river Halys to the western extremity of Asia, and even to Egypt and the Red Sea.
