Isaiah 34:2

"Come near, you nations, to hear! Listen, you peoples. Let the earth and all it contains hear, the world, and everything that comes from it."

Key Reflection

Isaiah 34:2 is a powerful call for attention in the ancient Near East where hearing was not merely an act of listening but also an invitation to engage with the message and understand its implications. The verse commands all nations, peoples, the earth itself, and everything within it to listen—a command that underscores the gravity and universality of what follows. This imperative sets the stage for a revelation about God’s judgment on the nations, highlighting both the divine sovereignty and the cosmic scope of His action.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

For the indignation of the Lord -Yahweh is about to express his wrath against all the nations which are opposed to his people. He hath utterly destroyed them -In his purpose, or intention. The prophet represents this as so certain that it may be exhibited as already done.
