Isaiah 31:5

"For the LORD says to me, “As the lion and the young lion growling over his prey, if a multitude of shepherds is called together against him, will not be dismayed at their voice, nor abase himself for their noise, so the LORD of Armies will come down to fight on Mount Zion and on its heights."

Key Reflection

This verse uses the image of a lion to symbolize the steadfastness and courage of God in the face of opposition. Just as a lion remains unafraid despite the presence of many shepherds, so too will the LORD remain unwavered when He comes to defend Jerusalem against its enemies on Mount Zion and its heights.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

As birds flying -This is another comparison indicating substantially the same thing as the former, that Yahweh would protect Jerusalem. The idea here is, that He would do it in the same manner as birds defend their young by hovering over them, securing them under their wings, and leaping forward, if they are suddenly attacked, to defend them. Our Saviour has used a similar figure to indicate his readiness to have defended and saved the same cityMatthew 23:27, and it is possible that he may have had this passage in his eye.
