Isaiah 27:12

"When its boughs are withered, they will be broken off. The women will come and set them on fire, for they are a people of no understanding. Therefore he who made them will not have compassion on them, and he who formed them will show them no favor."

Key Reflection

When its boughs are withered, they will be broken off—this imagery suggests that Israel’s leaders and religious institutions, once vibrant but now decaying, will face destruction. The women symbolize the destructive force of judgment, as in ancient times, women often tended to fires or carried out punishments. This verse indicates that because the people lack true understanding and have disobeyed God, he will not show them mercy; his wrath will be just and final, reflecting his deep disappointment with their persistent rebellion.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall beat off -The word which is used here (חבטchâbaṭ) means properly “to beat off with a stick,” as fruit from a treeDeuteronomy 20:20. It also means to beat out grain with a stickJudges 6:11;Ruth 2:17The word which is rendered in the other member of the sentence, ‘shall be gathered’ (לקטlâqaṭ), is applied to the act of “collecting” fruit after it has been beaten from a tree, or grain after it has been threshed. The use of these words here shows that the image is taken from the act of collecting fruit or grain after harvest; and the expression means, that as the farmer gathers in his fruit, so God would gather in his people.
