Isaiah 24:10

"They will not drink wine with a song. Strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it."

Key Reflection

In Isaiah 24:10, the verse suggests that during times of calamity, even previously enjoyable activities like drinking wine and singing will lose their pleasure, indicating a profound spiritual and emotional shift. The mention of "strong drink" being bitter reflects how severe hardships can make normally comforting things taste harsh or unappealing, symbolizing the distress and sorrow brought upon the people.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

The city of confusion -That Jerusalem is here intended there can be no doubt. The name ‘city of confusion.’ is probably given to it by anticipation of what it would be; that is, as it appeared in prophetic vision to Isaiah (see the note atIsaiah 1:1). He gave to it a name that would describe its state when these calamities should have come upon it. The word rendered ‘confusion’ (תהוtôhû) does not denote disorder or anarchy, but is a word expressive of emptiness, vanity, destitution of form, waste.
