But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there -Hebrew, (צייםtsı̂yı̂ym). This word denotes properly those animals that dwell in dry and desolate places, fromציtsı̂y“a waste, a desert.” The ancient versions have differed considerably in the interpretation. The Septuagint in different places renders it,ΘηριάThēria- ‘Wild animals;’ orδαιμόνιαdaimonia- ‘Demons.’ The Syriac, ‘Wild animals, spirits, sirens.’ Vulgate, ‘Beasts, demons, dragons.’ Abarbanel renders it, ‘Apes.’ This word is applied to people, inPsalms 72:9;Psalms 74:14; to animals,Isaiah 23:13;Isaiah 34:14;Jeremiah 50:39. Bochart supposes that wild cats or catamounts are here intended.
