Hosea 9:15

"Give them—LORD what will you give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts."

Key Reflection

In Hosea 9:15, the Lord asks rhetorically, "What will you give?" This question sets the stage for divine judgment, indicating that the punishment will be severe and fitting. The Lord then commands to "Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts." In first-century Israel, fertility was closely tied to a woman's ability to bear children with healthy, nourished infants. A "miscarrying womb" suggests barrenness or failure to produce viable offspring, while "dry breasts" imply an inability to nurse those few who might be born. This prophecy thus envisions a future where the people will face severe deprivation and loss, highlighting God's judgment for their disobedience.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

All their wickedness is in Gilgal - “Gilgal,” having been the scene of so many of God’s mercies, had been, on that very ground, chosen as a popular scene for idol-worship (see the note above atHosea 4:15). And doubtless, Ephraim still deceived himself, and thought that his idolatrous worship, in a place once so hallowed, would still be acceptable with God.
