Hosea 5:6

"The pride of Israel testifies to his face. Therefore Israel and Ephraim will stumble in their iniquity. Judah also will stumble with them."

Key Reflection

In first-century Israel, this verse speaks to the proud and complacent nation that had strayed from God’s laws, a situation reminiscent of ancient Israel's moral and spiritual decline described in Hosea's prophecy. The original audience would have recognized the reference to historical cycles of sin and judgment, understanding that despite their current prosperity and self-righteousness, both Israel and Ephraim were still prone to idolatry and rebellion, aligning with the broader narrative of God’s repeated calls for repentance amidst national pride and idol worship. Judah’s inclusion highlights the interconnectedness of these tribes in their shared destiny under divine judgment.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

They shall go with their flocks - “They had let slip the day of grace, wherein God had called them to repentance, and promised to be found of them and to accept them. When then the decree was gone forth and judgment determined against them, all their outward shew of worship and late repentance shall not prevail to gain admittance for them to Him. He will not be found of them, hear them, nor accept them.
