Habakkuk 2:13

"Woe to him who builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity!"

Key Reflection

"Woe to him who builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity!" This prophetic warning from Habakkuk targets rulers and leaders who construct cities through violence and injustice. For the original audience of Judah, this would have been particularly poignant, as they had experienced the destruction of their own capital, Jerusalem, at the hands of the Babylonians. The verse underscores the moral judgment against those who exploit others for personal gain or political power, a theme that resonates with the broader critique of social and economic injustices in the prophets' writings.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Behold, is it not of the Lord of hosts that (the) people (nations) shall labor -o In (for) the very fire -literally, to suffice the fire? By God’s appointment, the end of all their labor is for the fire, what may suffice it to consume. This is the whole result of their labor; and so it is as if they had toiled for this; they built ceiled palaces and gorgeous buildings, only for the fire to consume them.
