Genesis 50:6

"‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying. Bury me in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come again.’”"

Key Reflection

In Genesis 50:6, Joseph speaks these words to Pharaoh after his father Jacob has passed away. The original audience would understand that this was a deeply personal and emotional request from one of Egypt's most powerful officials back to his homeland to honor his deceased father’s final wish. Jacob had previously made Joseph swear an oath before his death, instructing him to bury him in the family plot in Canaan, thus ensuring continuity with their ancestral heritage despite being in a foreign land.
