In Genesis 29:30, Jacob's uncle Laban gives his personal servant Bilhah to Rachel as a surrogate wife. This arrangement was common in ancient Near Eastern cultures where families might use female servants for childbearing when the master or mistress could not provide heirs directly. By giving Bilhah to Rachel, Laban essentially acknowledged and accepted Rachel’s inability to bear children naturally, while still maintaining his patriarchal authority within the family structure.
