When God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, he brought about a complete devastation, not just of the cities themselves but of their surrounding plains and all that grew there. This catastrophic event would have left the original audience in awe, understanding it as a divine judgment on extreme sinfulness, a reminder of God’s power to bring sudden and total destruction upon those who reject his commands.
