Galatians 6:8

"Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap."

Key Reflection

Galatians 6:8 teaches us a fundamental principle of divine justice and causality: "Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap." This verse echoes the concept found in the Torah where the idea of “measure for measure” or “karma” is implicit. In first-century Galatia, as in many ancient cultures, agriculture was central to daily life, and the principle that seeds planted would yield a corresponding harvest was well understood. Paul uses this familiar agricultural metaphor to convey that just as one reaps what they sow in terms of crops, so too do they reap the consequences of their actions in every aspect of life—whether good or evil. This truth underscores the importance of responsible living and the inevitability of accountability before God.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 8. For he that soweth to his flesh. That makes provision for the indulgence of fleshly appetites and passions. See Barnes "Ga 5:19"; and Ga 5:20-21. He who makes use of his property to give indulgence to licentiousness, intemperance, and vanity. Shall of the flesh. From the flesh, or as that which indulgence in fleshly appetites properly produces. Punishment, under the Divine government, is commonly in the line of offences. The punishment of licentiousness and intemperance in this life is commonly loathsome and offensive disease; and, when long indulged, the sensualist becomes haggard, and bloated, and corrupted, and sinks into the grave.
