Galatians 5:16

"But if you bite and devour one another, be careful that you don’t consume one another."

Key Reflection

In Galatians 5:16, Paul warns the early Christian community in Galatia against a tendency that was undermining their unity and relationship with one another. Drawing from the cultural context of ancient cities where competition often led to factionalism and strife, Paul uses vivid imagery—“bite and devour”—to describe how Christians were tearing each other apart. This could be seen as a direct reference to the divisive practices of certain teachers who had introduced legalistic requirements that conflicted with the freedom in Christ, leading to conflict and division among believers.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 16. This I say then. This is the true rule about overcoming the propensities of your carnal natures, and of avoiding the evils of strife and contention. Walk. The Christian life is often represented as a journey; and the word walk, in the Scripture, is often equivalent to live, Mr 7:5. See Barnes "Ro 4:12"; See Barnes "Ro 6:4"; See Barnes "Ro 8:1". In the Spirit. Live under the influences of the Holy Spirit; admit those influences fully into your hearts. Do not resist him, but yield to all his suggestions. See Barnes "Ro 8:1". What the Holy Spirit would produce, Paul states in Ga 5:22,23".
