Ezra 1:5

"Then the heads of fathers’ households of Judah and Benjamin, the priests and the Levites, all whose spirit God had stirred to go up, rose up to build the LORD’s house which is in Jerusalem."

Key Reflection

This verse signifies that those chosen by God, including leaders, religious officials, and common people, were spiritually motivated to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. It highlights a divine call to action, emphasizing both leadership and communal participation in restoring worship to its sacred place.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Only a portion of the Israelites took advantage of the permission of Cyrus. Many remained in Babylon, since they were disinclined to relinquish their property. They who returned were persons whom God had especially stirred up to make sacrifices for His glory.
