Ezekiel 36:25

"“‘“For I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all the countries, and will bring you into your own land."

Key Reflection

Ezekiel 36:25 speaks to a profound transformation promised by God to the exiled Israelites. Through this verse, God assures that He will not only reunite His people from various nations and lands of their exile but also endow them with a new heart and spirit, symbolizing a spiritual renewal as well as physical return to their homeland. This promise reflects God's covenantal faithfulness and the dual aspect of restoration—both material (returning to the land) and spiritual (inner transformation).

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Ezekiel the priest has in view the purifying rites prescribed by the Law, the symbolic purport of which is exhibited inHebrews 9:13-14;Hebrews 10:22. As the Levites were consecrated with sprinkling of water, so should the approved rite “sprinkling of water” thus prescribed by the Law and explained by the prophets, give occasion to the use of water at the admission of proselytes in later days, and so to its adoption by John in his baptism unto repentance.
