Ezekiel 23:41
"“Furthermore you sisters have sent for men who come from far away, to whom a messenger was sent, and behold, they came; for whom you washed yourself, painted your eyes, decorated yourself with ornaments,"
Key Reflection
In Ezekiel 23:41, the prophet likens Israel and Samaria to sisters who engage in sexual misconduct as a metaphor for their idolatrous practices. The original audience would have understood this imagery vividly, given the cultural context where women’s physical adornment was significant. Just as these women would go to great lengths—sending messengers and preparing themselves—to entertain men from afar, so too did Israel and Samaria go to great lengths to seek out foreign gods, illustrating their persistent apostasy despite God's repeated warnings and blessings.
