The instruction to avoid making a covenant with the inhabitants of the land warns the Israelites about the dangers of entanglement with local religions and cultural practices. For the ancient Israelites, such covenants could lead to syncretism—blending their monotheistic worship with pagan rituals and deities, which would introduce idolatry into their lives and bring spiritual danger, as the Canaanite inhabitants were known for their many gods and practices that the Israelites were commanded to reject.
