Exodus 21:19

"“If men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone, or with his fist, and he doesn’t die, but is confined to bed;"

Key Reflection

In Exodus 21:19, the original audience would have recognized this law as part of a broader code that governed personal injuries in ancient Israelite society. The context suggests that if one person struck another with either a stone or their fist and the victim did not immediately die but was instead incapacitated enough to need bed rest, the perpetrator faced significant consequences. This reflects the societal importance placed on reparation and restitution, ensuring that those who caused harm were held accountable for both financial compensation and possibly further physical treatment of the injured party until they recovered.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Quit -i. e. if one man injured another in a quarrel so as to oblige him to keep his bed, he was free from the liability to a criminal charge (such as might be based uponExodus 21:12): but he was required to compensate the latter for the loss of his time, and for the cost of his healing.
