Exodus 13:18
"When Pharaoh had let the people go, God didn’t lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and they return to Egypt”;"
Key Reflection
The Israelites, after being released from slavery in Egypt under Pharaoh's reluctant permission, were led by God through a more circuitous route rather than taking the shorter and seemingly safer path through Philistia. This decision was made to prevent the people from losing heart at the first sight of potential conflict or hardship, thus avoiding any temptation to return to their former life in Egypt. The original audience would have understood that this detour was a strategic move by God to ensure the Israelites remained committed and focused on their journey towards the promised land, rather than succumbing to fear or nostalgia.
