In Ephesians 6:18, Paul instructs the early Christian community to “take” two metaphorical items that represent spiritual armor and weaponry: the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God). For the original audience, these metaphors would have resonated with their understanding of military and protective gear. The helmet symbolized protection for the head, a crucial part of any soldier’s defense, while the sword represented both offensive and defensive capability in battle. By equipping believers with these spiritual tools, Paul was urging them to stand firm against the schemes of darkness, much like soldiers prepared for war.
