Ecclesiastes 7:4

"Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good."

Key Reflection

In the ancient world, facial expressions and public displays of emotion were highly significant in social interactions. For the people of Solomon's time, a person’s sorrow was more readily observable than their laughter. The verse suggests that genuine sorrow, which is outwardly displayed through one’s face, can lead to inner emotional healing or moral rectification. In contrast, laughter might be forced or insincere and thus less effective in bringing about true emotional transformation.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

House of mourning ... house of mirth -These phrases acquire a forcible significance from the Eastern custom of prolonging both festive and mournful celebrations through several days. SeeGenesis 50:10;Judges 14:17. This verse indicates that a life of enjoyment, does not mean the abandonment of ourselves to pleasures, but the thankful and sober use of the beautiful things which God gives us.
