Deuteronomy 9:3

"a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you have heard say, “Who can stand before the sons of Anak?”"

Key Reflection

In Deuteronomy 9:3, Moses addresses the Israelites about their upcoming encounter with a formidable people—the Anakim—who are described as "great and tall." This description reflects both their physical stature and their perceived strength and might, as reflected in the phrase "whom you know, and of whom you have heard say, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’" This cultural context highlights the formidable nature of these enemies, emphasizing that the Israelites will face a daunting challenge upon entering Canaan. The verse sets up both the physical reality of the land's inhabitants and the spiritual challenges they will encounter as they fulfill their covenant with God.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

So shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly -This is not inconsistent withDeuteronomy 7:22, in which instant annihilation is not to be expected for the reasons assigned. Here Moses urges the people to trust in God’s covenanted aid; since He would then make no delay in so destroying the nations attacked by them as to put them into enjoyment of the promises, and in doing so as fast as was for the well-being of Israel itself.
