Key Reflection

The Israelites were given this commandment as they prepared to conquer and settle Canaan, a land filled with diverse peoples who worshipped various gods often associated with idolatry and moral corruption (Deuteronomy 20:19). This instruction warned them against adopting the religious practices of these Canaanite nations, which included rituals and deities that were detestable to Yahweh. By avoiding such abominations, the Israelites would remain faithful to their own covenant with God and avoid falling into the same sins that plagued the native inhabitants.
