Deuteronomy 12:6

"But to the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes, to put his name there, you shall seek his habitation, and you shall come there."

Key Reflection

This verse emphasizes that the true spiritual dwelling of the Lord is not tied to a specific location but rather to wherever He chooses to dwell among His people. The faithful are called to seek out and follow Him, making their hearts and lives his temporary sanctuary as they journey towards ultimate rest in Him.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Some have objected that this command cannot possibly have been ever carried out, at all events until in later (lays the territory which owned obedience to it was narrowed to the little kingdom of Judah. But in these and in other precepts Moses doubtless takes much for granted. He is here, as elsewhere, regulating and defining more precisely institutions which had long been in existence, as to many details of which custom superseded the necessity of specific enactment.
