Amos 5:24

"Take away from me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps."

Key Reflection

Amos 5:24 challenges the religious practices of Israel, which involved elaborate musical and vocal performances in their worship. To Amos' original audience, these songs and harp music were part of a vibrant temple life but were seen by God as superficial and meaningless, emphasizing instead the need for genuine justice and righteousness to reflect true devotion.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

But -(And) let judgment run down (Literally, “roll” English margin) “like water.” The duties of either table include both; since there is no true love for man without the love of God, nor any real love or duty to God without the love of man. People will exchange their sins for other sins. They will not break them off unless they be converted to God. But the first outward step in conversion, is to break off sin.
