Amos 3:7

"Does the trumpet alarm sound in a city, without the people being afraid? Does evil happen to a city, and the LORD hasn’t done it?"

Key Reflection

In Amos 3:7, the prophet addresses the ancient Israelites who lived in a society where announcements of impending judgment were common. The image of a trumpet alarm signals danger, and the people would naturally fear because divine judgment often preceded military conquests or natural disasters. By asking if evil befalls a city without God's involvement, Amos underscores that any significant event, especially those bringing calamity, originate from the sovereign will of the Lord, reinforcing his role as both the source of blessings and judgments in their lives.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Surely the Lord God will do -For the Lord God “doeth” Nothing, but He revealeth His secret unto His servants the prophets -So our Lord saith, “And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe” (John 14:29; compareJohn 13:19). While it is yet a “secret” counsel within Himself, He admitteth to it His servants the prophets.
