Acts 28:27
"saying, ‘Go to this people and say, in hearing, you will hear, but will in no way understand. In seeing, you will see, but will in no way perceive."
Key Reflection
In first-century Palestine, the notion of a people who hear without understanding and see without perceiving was deeply troubling and indicative of divine judgment. The Romans, to whom this passage likely refers, would have understood this as a condemnation of their stubborn refusal to accept God’s message through the apostle Paul. This prophetic statement aligns with Isaiah's similar declaration in Isaiah 6:9-10, where it is used to describe Israel's spiritual deafness and blindness, now extended metaphorically to include the Roman authorities who opposed Christian teachings.
