Acts 20:10

"A certain young man named Eutychus sat in the window, weighed down with deep sleep. As Paul spoke still longer, being weighed down by his sleep, he fell down from the third floor and was taken up dead."

Key Reflection

In Acts 20:10, we see a vivid example of physical and spiritual exhaustion. The young man Eutychus, likely feeling the weight of the long night filled with intense discourse, succumbed to deep sleep while sitting in a window on the third floor. This event serves as a poignant illustration of human frailty and the power of divine grace, as Paul's unwavering presence and ministry were so impactful that even someone deeply fatigued remained engaged enough to hear until death seemed an option. This scene underscores the profound impact of Paul’s teachings and his ability to inspire such dedicated listeners, even in the face of physical exhaustion.

From the Scholars: Barnes' Notes

Verse 10. And fell on him, etc. Probably stretching himself on him as Elisha did on the Shunammite's son, 2 Ki 4:33-35. It was an act of tenderness and compassion, evincing a strong desire to restore him to life. Trouble not yourselves. They would doubtless be thrown into great consternation by such an event. Paul therefore endeavoured to compose their minds by the assurance that he would live. For his life is in him. He is restored to life. This has all the appearance of having been a miracle. Life was restored to him as Paul spoke.
